About Me

Amber KlecknerAmber Kleckner, PhD

née Amber Simmons

I obtained my BS (2007) and MS (2008) in biochemistry from The Ohio State University and my PhD in nutrition (2012) also from OSU. My PhD was completed in Dr. Yael Vodovotz’s lab in the Department of Food Science, and my thesis assessed the physical and nutritional properties of a soy-based snack food. I was then awarded the USDA AFRI/NIFA post-doctoral fellowship, which I completed in Dr. Barbara Corkey’s laboratory in the Department of Medicine at Boston University. My project looked at how a long-term high vs. low glycemic index diets affected oxidative stress and the development of obesity in a mouse model. I now work at University of Rochester on the Cancer Control team and serve as a scientific consultant to laboratories and companies around the world.

I have experience designing, executing, and completing experiments from the molecular level through the in vitro level (i.e., cell culture and simulated digestion), animal studies, and human clinical trials. I also played key roles in writing a review article and conducting a meta-analysis. I have a wide range of experience in scientific writing including public and private grants, strategic rationales, summaries of primary literature for the public, and magazine articles. Although my training was primarily in biochemistry, nutrition, and food science, I can successfully help clients in a large variety of fields including engineering and other areas of the biological sciences.
